Senior Technician: Vyv is a senior research technician at the Marine Futures Lab, where he splits his time between fieldwork, data curation, managing staff workflow, and identifying and analysing marine species from BRUVs. In addition to his work with BRUVs, Vyv has experience with a range of other marine research techniques, including:

  • Drone surveys (plastic sampling and marine megafauna observation).

  • Catch and release fishing, used to measure size and collect tissue samples from selected species.

  • Seabed monitoring, using both Dropcams and Towed Video.

  • Seabird surveys from both stationary and moving vessels.

  • Underwater Visual Census (tropical fishes), using SCUBA.

  • eDNA collection and filtration.

  • Seafood sampling (DNA metabarcoding) to investigate seafood mislabelling.

    Bio:
Vyv grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and has always had an affinity for the ocean. This interest led him to complete a BSc in Marine and Environmental Sciences at Murdoch University. To date, Vyv has over 12 years of experience working in marine sciences and has been fortunate enough to participate in over 15 field expeditions with the Marine Futures Lab. Vyv is passionate about the ocean, its protection, and the species that inhabit it. He is happiest either on or in the water.
