Students and staff of the Centre for the Marine Futures and the UWA School of Biological Sciences were among the lucky few to embark on an inspiring and important intellectual journey over a week-long masterclass delivered by world-leading fisheries expert Prof. Daniel Pauly.

Prof. Pauly is the Principal Investigator of the Sea Around Us Project, a global initiative based at the University of British Columbia and devoted to studying, documenting and promoting policies to mitigate the impact of fisheries on ocean ecosystems.

Across a series of ten lecture, Prof. Pauly drew on his extraordinary 30+ years of experience in multiple countries to paint a compelling picture of the state of global fisheries and the impacts of climate change on fish populations. His focus on ‘big data’ invited the audience to think outside the box, with inspiring words for early-career researchers on overcoming the challenges of academic research.

The lectures concentrated on the following themes, and can be downloaded as individual PDF documents below (or as a combined archive using the link on the left):

  1. Lecture 1: Global fisheries catches and their reconstruction.

  2. Lecture 2: The human conquest of the Earth and the oceans.

  3. Lecture 3: Fishing down marine food webs.

  4. Lecture 4: Five Easy Pieces.

  5. Lecture 5: The making of FishBase.

  6. Lecture 6: Oxygen, temperature and the growth of fish.

  7. Lecture 7: Global warming, fish and fisheries.

  8. Lecture 8: Basic fisheries economics.

  9. Lecture 9: Fisheries management and governance.

  10. Lecture 10: Bad grafs as an issenshial part of bad presantashions.

  11. Bonus lecture (given at Charles Darwin University and the UWA University Club):
Fisheries and Global Warming: Impacts on Marine Ecosystems.

Prof. Pauly is currently visiting the university to facilitate the launch of the Indian Ocean node of Sea Around Us at UWA, which Dr. Dirk Zeller will lead and develop as of August 2017 following his recent appointment as Professor of Marine Conservation.

On June 12, he will also be part of a public panel session entitled “Sustainable Ocean and Security: Global Perspectives on the Indian Ocean Rim” held at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (Crawley).
