Prof. Daniel Pauly delivers ocean conservation masterclass at UWA
Students and staff of the Centre for the Marine Futures and the UWA School of Biological Sciences were among the lucky few to embark on an inspiring and important intellectual journey over a week-long masterclass delivered by world-leading fisheries expert Prof. Daniel Pauly.
Prof. Pauly is the Principal Investigator of the Sea Around Us Project, a global initiative based at the University of British Columbia and devoted to studying, documenting and promoting policies to mitigate the impact of fisheries on ocean ecosystems.
Across a series of ten lecture, Prof. Pauly drew on his extraordinary 30+ years of experience in multiple countries to paint a compelling picture of the state of global fisheries and the impacts of climate change on fish populations. His focus on ‘big data’ invited the audience to think outside the box, with inspiring words for early-career researchers on overcoming the challenges of academic research.

Prof. Pauly is currently visiting the university to facilitate the launch of the Indian Ocean node of Sea Around Us at UWA, which Dr. Dirk Zeller will lead and develop as of August 2017 following his recent appointment as Professor of Marine Conservation.
On June 12, he will also be part of a public panel session entitled “Sustainable Ocean and Security: Global Perspectives on the Indian Ocean Rim” held at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (Crawley).
