PhD title: Reconstruction and analyses of data for the global large pelagic fisheries: IUU fishing, policy ramifications and the UN High Seas Agreement.
Start date: February 2020.
The main objectives of my project are to fill the data and transparency gap within global large-pelagic fisheries beyond national jurisdiction, to find patterns of unreported fishing and to determine the extent of modern slavery and other unethical and illegal cost-cutting actions within fisheries. My research addresses the need to investigate high-seas fisheries and to provide the best and most comprehensive data and analyses to empower effective management and policy decisions. The research will advance big-data analyses on the high-seas fisheries as an important contribution to the implementation and interpretation of the pending UN High Seas Agreement.
BIO: I come from Germany, where I received my Bachelors in Biology from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and my MSc degree in Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Science from the University of Hamburg. I have always been fascinated by the interaction between humans and marine environments, which is why, after getting my Master’s degree, I decided to join the Sea Around Us- Indian Ocean for my PhD. I am also a member of the Marine Futures Lab.
